Slimmer SMTP traffic: Auto-zip attachments at the Gateway

MaX Compression Gateway reduces email system demands and increases user productivity.

19th March 2003.

The latest addition to the MaX Compression Enterprise family of auto-zipping solutions for Microsoft Exchange is now available. MaX Compression Gateway monitors the SMTP access point for email entering or leaving the Exchange environment, minimizing use of system resources such as storage and bandwidth by auto-zipping email attachments as they arrive.

A zipped email attachment can reduce in size by up to 80%; if all attachments are auto-zipped, bandwidth and email storage requirements can drop by an average of 40-55%. MaX Compression performs intelligent auto-zipping at the Gateway, ensuring that traffic entering the network is optimized for size, with resultant system and user productivity benefits.

Rules-based conditions, applied invisibly to the attachment compression process are the basis for MaX Compression Gateway's 'intelligent' zipping or unzipping of files. Multiple, granular 'Smart Rules', employed by the entire MC Enterprise family may be applied in either direction according to, for example; size of file, type of attachment or by domain or sub-domain.1

The Gateway works seamlessly in conjunction with other processes including encryption, virus and content scanners. The file can be decompressed by any manual 'zipping' application, and a MaX Compression Reader module is available to auto-decompress the attachments for users with no client-based solution, saving valuable time.

"We've developed the MC Gateway product for organizations that want to seal that final gap in their zipped Enterprise environment. Third party inbound email can come in high volumes with large attachments and really hit a network and its users hard. Zipped email is leaner and meaner - it helps your Exchange system to work better for you." Dave Hunt, CEO C2C.

"For more than 6 years now, C2C has been developing solutions to help Exchange users reduce their total cost of ownership," said Chris Baker, group product manager for Exchange at Microsoft Corp. "MaX Compression Gateway helps optimize system resources and reduces the impact of inbound email traffic on the Exchange system."

MaX Compression Gateway is the latest addition to the MaX Compression Enterprise family of intelligent auto-zipping products for Exchange. Also available are Outlook Client, Outlook Web Access and Exchange server modules of MaX Compression.

1 eg. zip to @associatedcompany.com and not zip to anyone@msn.com; inbound with set-ups by country, you could zip to @us.mycompany.com and not-zip to @uk.mycompany.com depending on the user or whether the country has implemented a corporate zip solution.
